This is the annoucement of the following result. Any subvariety in the Siegel modular variety \(H_ n/\Gamma_ n\), \(n\geq 10\), of codimension one, is of general type, and consequently the birational automorphism group of \(H_ n/\Gamma_ n(\ell)\) equals its automorphism group \(\Gamma_ n/\pm \Gamma_ n(\ell)\). The details will be published in Tsukuba J. Math. 11, No.1 (June 1987). After this the author studies the similar property of Hilbert modular varieties, which already appeared in Math. Ann. 274, 659-670 (1986; Zbl 0576.10022).
