This technical note reports a new explicit finite difference equation for heat conduction. It has been tested by calculating the temperature response of a slab to transient excitation for which an analytical solution is available. The new equation yields results more accurate than the finite difference equations in current use. By using a scheme of subdividing the time interval, the time steps can be made arbitrarily large without loss of stability or increased storage need.
