A proof of the theorem stated in the title is given. Apart from being of interest itself, the result also has some applications in the representation theory of arbitrary finite groups (using the classification of finite simple groups). For example: ''Let G be a finite group, p a prime. Then \(p\nmid \chi (1)\) for all ordinary (resp. modular) irreducible characters \(\chi\) of G, if and only if G has a normal abelian (resp. normal) p-Sylow subgroup.''
