In this paper the joint genotypic structure of parents and their offspring in inbred populations is analyzed using gene covariance methods. A single locus with two alleles is considered and the following assumptions are made: equal allele frequencies in males and females, equal allele frequencies in the two generations, and independence of inbreeding from genotype. These assumptions include selection against inbred offspring and diversifying selection among subpopulations, but exclude directional selection. Extensions to the case of different male and female allele frequencies and to the case of multiple alleles are discussed. Using (0,1) random variables for the four alleles that constitute a given mating pair and for sampling of gametes from heterozygous parental zygotes, the genotypic structure of offspring and the joint structure of parent and offspring is derived. The corresponding expectations are expressed by the allele frequency, two covariances and one third central moment. Furthermore, transformation yields a description in terms of the following parameters: Wright's fixation index F and two parameters D and E describing the mating structure. E is called the effective selfing rate and represents the proportion of offspring that segregates as if derived from self-fertilization, and D is called the inbreeding assortative selfing rate and measures the degree that effective selfing assorts with respect to inbreeding.
