Let \[ S(x,y,\alpha)=\sum_{x-y<n\leq x}\Lambda (n)e(n\alpha) \] where \(\Lambda\) is the von Mangoldt function and \(e(x)=\exp (2\pi ix)\). The authors prove that \[ S(x,y,a/q)\ll (x^{1/2} q^{1/2}+y q^{- 1/2}+x^{3/10} y^{1/2})\log^{100} x \] uniformly for \(1\leq y\leq x\) and coprime integers a and q. This bound is non-trivial for \(y\geq x^{3/5+\varepsilon}\). It improves an earlier result of \textit{Chen Jingrun} [Sci. Sin. 14, 1113--1117 (1965; Zbl 0146.27304)] who had obtained a non-trivial bound for the range \(y\geq x^{2/3+\varepsilon}\). The proof is based on Heath-Brown's identity and standard analytic techniques.
