Let S be a commutative semigroup and let R be a ring which is not Jacobson radical. Conditions for the semigroup ring R[S] to be semilocal or local are found in terms of the least separative and p-separative congruences on S. This is done through a description of semilocal semilattice-graded rings with non-radical homogeneous components, applied to the grading of R[S] coming from the Archimedean decomposition of S. Note that the main theorem may be also deduced from the reviewer's results on semilocal semigroup rings of not necessarily commutative semigroups [Glasg. Math. J. 25, 37-44 (1984; Zbl 0529.20052)].
