Let p be a prime number, F the field with p elements, and M the additive group of n-by-m matrices over F on which \(G=GL(n,F)\times GL(m,F)\) acts in the obvious way. The authors compute the G-invariants in the fraction field of the symmetric algebra of M. This study of the invariants leads to the construction of classes in \(H^*(GL(n+m,F);F)\) by viewing \(G\ltimes M\) as a parabolic subgroup of \(GL(n+m,F)\) and combining the theory of characteristic classes with ''favorable properties'' of the transfer map from \(G\ltimes M\) to \(GL(n+m,F)\).
