In this work the author studied the determination of residual stress in an elastic body. In doing this she first proved that the volume average of the residual stress must vanish; that is, the residual stress cannot be uniform throughout the body. In section 2, starting with the theory of finite elasticity, she provided a careful derivation of the linearized constitutive equation which is appropriate to small deformations from the residually stressed reference configuration. They made no assumptions concerning how the residual stress arises, in particular, it need not be the result of prior elastic behavior. In section 3, the author considered a body that has the shape of a right circular cylinder in its residually stressed reference configuration. She was able to show that the incremental elasticities are determined by the torsion test and that the residual stress field is determined pointwise by the torsion test. The author also obtained lower bounds for the components of the residual stress in terms of the applied torque and the angle of twist. This work is quite interesting and will be very useful for those researchers working on the residual stresses in elastic bodies.
