    Der Artikel behandelt Lagranges Auffassung von der algebraischen Analysis und prüft kritisch seinen Beweis für Taylors Satz, die Grundlage seines algebraischen Programms. Lagranges eindrucksvoller algebraischer Stil wird am Beispiel zweier Themen untersucht, der Theorie der singulären Lösungen für gewöhnliche Differentialgleichungen und der Variationsrechnung. Ein zentrales Thema des Aufsatzes betrifft Lagranges Behandlung der Ausnahmewerte in seinem Beweis für analytische Sätze. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß Lagranges algebraisches Programm natürlich war, daß aber seine Auffassung von einer funktionalen Beziehung, die durch einen einzigen analytischen Ausdruck gegeben ist, zu begrenzt war, um eine angemessene Grundlage für die Analysis zu liefern.
