A condition that a formal power series in n complex variables be convergent is that the series be convergent when restricted to every line through the origin. This is a classical theorem of Hartog. A much stronger version of Hartog's theorem in fact holds. A formal power series will be convergent if it converges on linear spaces of positive capacity where the capacity is measured in the appropriate Grassmann manifold. This strong version of Hartog's theorem is proved and examples are given to indicate that capacity gives the sharpest possible result on conditions for convergence.
