An independence space arises from certain submodules of a given model [the author, ''Independence spaces and uniform modules'', ibid. 6, 29-36 (1985; see the review above)]. Using this relationship, the paper establishes that the dimension of the module is precisely the rank of an associated independence structure, when dimension is taken to be the Goldie dimension or its dual, or the Fleury spanning dimension or its dual. In each case, the paper devises an appropriate independence structure.
