Let G be the algebraic group Sp(4,K), where K is an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>0\). Let G(p) be the finite group Sp(4,p). The author studies the principal p-block, and in particular the projective modules in the block, of G(p). The irreducible G-modules can be written as L(r,s) where r, s are non-negative integers, and the irreducible G(p)- modules are then the restrictions of those L(r,s) for which \(0\leq r,s<p\). (In particular, L(0,0) is the trivial module.) For such r, s let U(r,s) denote the projective cover of L(r,s). The author then states the following theorem: Let \(p>7\). The Brauer character of U(0,0) is the sum of 14 distinct ordinary characters. He lists these characters and their degrees explicitly, and gives a sketch of the proof. The proof follows a method he used earlier for the group SL(3,p) [ibid. 72, 8-16 (1981; Zbl 0474.20021)] and involves indecomposable G-modules Q(r,s) whose restrictions to G(p) contain U(r,s) with multiplicity one. He also represents pictorially, via the Brauer complex, the decompositions of U(0,p-1), U(1,p-1), U(p-1,2) and U(p-1,0).
