The author uses a mathematical model in which the artery is treated as an initially stressed elastic cylindrical tube containing a non-Newtonian viscous incompressible fluid (representing the blood); the blood flow is assumed to be characterized by the power law model whose consistency varies symmetrically along the radial direction. The effect of the surrounding connective tissues on the motion of the wall is also incorporated. The shear stresses developed in the arterial lumen and the flow characteristics of blood are quantified through numerical computations of the resulting expressions by making use of finite difference technique.
