The Banach algebra \(A_{p,\alpha}({\mathbb{R}}^+)\) of operators in the space \(L_ p({\mathbb{R}}^+,x^{\alpha})\) \((1<p<\infty\), \({\mathbb{R}}^+=[0,\infty)\), \(-1<\alpha <p-1)\) generated by the Fourier and Mellin convolution operators \[ W_ a=P_+F^{-1}aFL_+,\quad {\mathfrak M}_ b={\mathfrak M}^{-1}b{\mathfrak M} \] \[ F\phi (\lambda)=\int^{\infty}_{-\infty}\exp (i\lambda x)\phi (x)dx,\quad {\mathfrak M}\psi (\lambda)=\int^{\infty}_{0}x^{\beta -i\lambda}\psi (x)dx \] together with the multiplication operators cl; the presymbol a(\(\lambda)\), b(\(\lambda)\) on \({\mathbb{R}}\) and the functions c(x) on \({\mathbb{R}}^+\) are discontinuous, but have bounded variation; \(P_+\) is the restriction from \({\mathbb{R}}\) to \({\mathbb{R}}^+\) and \(L_+\) is the extension by 0 from \({\mathbb{R}}^+\) to \({\mathbb{R}}\). The symbol for the operator \(B\in A_{p,\alpha}({\mathbb{R}}^+)\) is defined; the Fredholmity criterion and the index formulae for B via its symbol is obtained. The main results of the paper for the case \(p=2\), \(\alpha =0\) and some restrictions on continuity property of presymbols were obtained earlier by \textit{H. O. Cordes} in J. Math. Mech. 18, 893-908 (1969; Zbl 0176.450) and generalized for \(1<p<\infty\) by \textit{G. Thelen} in his Dissertation [TH Darmstadt, FRG (1985; Zbl 0575.47033)]. The most general results in this direction were obtained by the author independently and published in 1973-1978 [cf. \textit{R. Duduchava}, Math. Nachr. 79, 75-98 (1977; Zbl 0362.45004), for example], but even these results are revised here.
