The paper discusses an analytic procedure applicable at several stages of exploration, but focuses on the final drilling stage for oil and gas. It establishes the context for the problem with background information and several definitions. Next, it derives the value of information from drilling. Finally, the author formulates a multiple objective mathematical programming problem for drilling site selection and discusses alternative objectives and constraints, with examples. The model, according to the author, is merely one additional tool to aid selection of drilling sites.
