The authors examine the bifurcation of linear instability to nonlinear instability of a system of articulated pipes containing a fluid flow. The equation of the pendular motion of the pipes is, in the conditions of the paper, a fourth order differential equation. By an averaging method, the author obtain for the normal form, a second-order system describing the interaction of a Hopf bifurcation and a pitchfork bifurcation. Twenty- three different cases are distinguished. Some of these cases are studied in detail and the results are physically interpreted.
