Consider a simple group \(N'/Z(N')\) extended properly below by a center of order 3 and above by index 2 with \(N/N'\) flipping the center \(Z(N')\). If \(N/N'\) contains D, a class of involutions outside of N' which pairwise generate only groups of order at most 6, these are called 3- transpositions. Five such groups have \(N/N'\) isomorphic to \(A_ 6\), \(A_ 7\), \(\Omega^-(6,3)\), \(\Omega(7,3)\), or \(F'_{24}\). Here related Conway-Norton algebras are constructed. S. D. Smith studied the automorphism group of the algebra in the first two cases. The author does it in the last three cases and finds that it is N in the last two cases and has index two over N in the middle case. He follows Tits in obtaining the structure of the centralizer of an involution, and then the finiteness of the automorphism group. Then he uses the characterization.
