The author considers nonlinear boundary value problems from an operator theoretic point of view. Elements of the theory include statements on existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence, and Galerkin approximations including error estimates. The operator equation considered, \(Lu+Gu=f\), is solved for u in the domain of L, where L is a closed densely defined symmetric linear operator in Hilbert space, and G is Lipschitz and coercive. The operator L is presumed to have a nontrivial null space, which may be infinite dimensional, and thus the theory applies to problems at resonance. Hyperbolic problems, in which boundary conditions are given in both space and time, are the main focus of applications, although the approach is general and may be applied to elliptic problems involving ordinary differential equations as well.
