The paper deals with the rational approximation of Stieltjes functions, i.e. of functions F: [-1,1]\(\to {\mathbb{R}}\) represented by \(F(x)=\int_{[a,b]}(x-t)^{-1}d\mu (t),\) \(1<a<b\), where \(\mu\) is a positive measure on [a,b]. The degree of rational approximation is given, firstly for an associated complex function f considered on the unit circle. Using the Carathéodory-Fejér method and the property of near circularity of the complex optimal error function the author obtains, finally, the best asymptotic estimates in the rational approximation of the Stieltjes functions.
