The authors derive upper bounds for the singular values of a certain class of fractional integral operators, by a method that requires no complex variable arguments. Such bounds are then used to extend earlier results [\textit{E. Hille} and \textit{J. D. Tamarkin}, Acta Math. 57, 1-76 (1931; Zbl 0003.00902); \textit{S. H. Chang}, Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 2, 22-29 (1952; Zbl 0046.110)] concerning the eigenvalues and singular values of more general integral operators.
