Many approximation processes are based on operators defined for functions with an unbounded domain. Let L be a certain almost convex operator of order r-1 (r\(\in {\mathbb{N}})\), defined on a suitable subspace of \(C^ r(I)\), \(I=[a,\infty [\). The aim of the paper is to prove an estimate for the rth derivative \(| D^ rf(x)-D^ rLf(x)|\) in terms of the first order modulus of continuity of \(D^ rf\) with respect to a compact interval K, which contains x, and in terms of the test functions \(D^ rLh_ x\) and \(D^ rLj_ x\). Applications to Baskakov, Szász, and Gamma operators are given.
