A new conceptual framework employing differential algebra is proposed for solving the long-standing problem of inverting nonlinear input-output differential systems. Simple characterizations of left and right invertibility are given which rest upon an invariant integer which, for constant linear systems, turns out to be the rank of the transfer matrix.
