The authors study periodic perfect splines of degree m with 2N free knots which have n distinct zeros in one period (of length 1) with multiplicities \(r_ 1,...,r_ n\) such that \(\sum^{n}_{i=1}r_ i=2N\). It is proved that there exists a unique (up to multiplication by - 1 and translation) spline of this type which has minimal uniform norm and that this optimal spline is characterized by an equioscillation property. Moreover, the relation to optimal recovery of smooth periodic functions is discussed. In particular, it is shown that equidistant nodes are optimal for recovery of functions which is based on Hermitian data with equal multiplicities. Similar results are obtained for periodic monosplines. The theorems in this paper continue and extend various results which were known before in the literature.
