Let X be a smooth variety over the field k (char(k)\(\neq 2)\) with function field K and residue field k(x) at \(x\in X\). If W(X) is the Witt ring of X and W(F) is the Witt ring of the field F, then there is a sequence \[ 0\quad \to \quad W(X)\quad \to \quad W(K)\quad \to \coprod_{co\dim (x)- 1}W(k(x)) \] which is exact at W(K). If X is a surface then the sequence is also exact at W(X). A correction of this paper consisting of a part of the text appeared in Math. 280, No.4, 697-698 (1988).
