    For weak solutions \(u\in L_ p([0,T],W^ 1_ p(\Omega))\cap L_{\infty}([0,T],L_ 2(\Omega))\) of the degenerate parabolic system \[ (1)\quad \partial u^ i/\partial t-div(| \nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u^ i)=0\quad on\quad \Omega \subset {\mathbb{R}}^ N,\quad 1\leq i\leq m,\quad p>2, \] the author proves by local techniques, using sequences of time-space cylinders, which are adjusted to the alternative whether one is at a point of degeneracy or not, that the spatial gradient of u is Hölder continuous on compact subsets \(\Omega_ T=\Omega \times [0,T]:\) There is an \(\alpha\in (0,1/(p-1))\), depending only on p and N and not on u, m, or \(\Omega_ T\), such that for all compact subsets \(K\subset \Omega_ T\) and all solutions u of (1) with \(| \nabla u| \leq M\) on K we have \[ | \nabla u(x,t)-\nabla u(x',t')| \leq C(K,M,p,N)\cdot \rho^{\alpha}, \] for \(\rho =| x-x'| +| t- t'|^{\gamma}\) with \(\gamma =1/(2+(2-p)^{\alpha})>1/2\).
