In this note an error of \textit{R. T. Curtis} [J. Algebra 63, 413-434 (1980; Zbl 0427.20010)] on the 3-local subgroups of the largest Conway group \(Co_ 1\) is corrected. Thus two types of maximal 3-local subgroups have to be deleted from his list. (Note that these groups also occur in the ATLAS of finite groups [Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1985; Zbl 0568.20001].) The proof is performed via a careful analysis of the 24- dimensional complex representation of \(2Co_ 1\).
