Let \(\{\phi_ t\}_{t\geq 0}\) be a semigroup of analytic functions mapping the unit disk into itself. The author considers the operator semigroups on \(H^ p\) of the form \(T_ t(f)=f\circ \phi_ t\), \(f\in H^ p\), \(t\geq 0\). \textit{E. Berkson} and \textit{H. Porta} [Mich. Math. J. 25, 101-115 (1978; Zbl 0382.47017)] proved that if \(\phi_ t\), \(t\geq 0\), have a common fixed point then the point spectrum of the infinitesimal generator \(\Gamma_ p\) of \(\{T_ t\}\) consists of a countable number of isolated eigenvalues. The author gives conditions for the compactness of the resolvent of \(\Gamma_ p\) in terms of a certain associated univalent function.
