Bosonization has been instrumental in establishing the equivalence between the Green-Schwarz and Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond superstring theories. This article supplies the mathematical arguments lying behind the announcement [cf. the authors, Phys. Lett. B 178, 41-47 (1986)] of the Fermi-Bose equivalence between certain 2d field theories in genus \(g\) having arbitrary spin. The relations between the complex geometry of moduli space, the determinant bundle of a family of Cauchy-Riemann operators and Faltings' work on Arakelov geometry are brilliantly exploited: one of the key facts proved here is that certain isomorphisms between determinant line bundles are in fact isometries in their natural Arakelov metrics. Following the introductory section (a startlingly clear exposition of bundles over Riemann surfaces) the arguments leading to the adoption of their bosonization prescription for higher spin and genus are meticulously developed. Bosonization formulae are proved using the mathematical apparatus considered earlier.
