An object A of a topos is said to be Dedekind finite if every monic endomorphism of A is an isomorphism. In this short but useful paper, the author presents a number of counterexamples (in various toposes of presheaves or sheaves) to show that in general the notion of Dedekind finiteness is less well behaved than one might have hoped.
