    Suppose that G is a finite non-cyclic group which possesses a set \({\mathfrak A}\) of conjugacy classes \(C_ 1,...,C_ r\) \((r\geq 2)\), such that \(C_ 1^{-1}\neq C_ 2\), \(<C_ i>=G\) and \(C_ iC_ j\) is a linear combination of classes in \(\tilde{\mathfrak A}={\mathfrak A}\cup \{(1)\}\) whenever \(i\neq j\). It is shown (Theorem 2) that \(\tilde{\mathfrak A}\) is the set of all classes and hence that G is a non-Abelian simple group. Analogously, suppose G has a set \({\mathfrak B}\) of nonlinear faithful irreducible characters \(\chi_ 1,...,\chi_ r\) \((r\geq 2)\) such that \(\chi_ i\chi_ j\) is a linear combination of characters in \(\tilde{\mathfrak B}={\mathfrak B}\cup \{l_ g\}\) \((i\neq j)\). In this case, \(\tilde{\mathfrak B}\) does not have to contain all the irreducible characters of G, but if it does not, the following hold. (1) \({\mathfrak B}\) is a set of real characters. (2) The intersection K of the kernels of the representations having characters not in \(\tilde{\mathfrak B}\) is the unique minimal normal subgroup of G, and \(\chi_ i(x)=0\) for all \(x\not\in K\) \((i=1,...,r)\). (3) Either K is elementary Abelian or \(G/K\) is of prime- power order. (4) \(K-\{1\}\) is the union of r real classes of G. (5) If \(g\in G-K\), gK is contained in a class of G. The proofs are elementary and similar.
