(From authors' introduction.) This paper studies the behavior of a perturbation of the flow of a compressible fluid. The basic flow involves shear deformation, variations in density, temperature fluctuations, etc. and evolves in time. Thus the perturbation is ``transported'' by the flow field. Conclusions about existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solution of the linearized Navier-Stokes system for compressible fluids are obtained under very general hypotheses on the coefficients (which depend on the basic flow), and on the domain in which the system evolves. These results shed light on the behavior of the physical solution.
