A theorem is provided that extends approximate confidence intervals on a positive difference of expected mean squares to the case where the sign is unknown. Numerical integration is used to illustrate the performance of the extension based on a method proposed by \textit{W. G. Howe} [J. Am. Stat. Assoc. 69, 789-794 (1974; Zbl 0291.62059)].
