Let u be a positive superharmonic function on a neighbourhood of the origin 0 of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) (n\(\geq 3)\) with associated Riesz measure \(\mu\). Let \({\mathcal M}_ 1(u;r)\) denote the mean value of u over the sphere \(\{| X| =r\}\) and let \({\mathcal M}_ p(f;r)=\{{\mathcal M}_ 1(f^ p;r)\}^{1/p}\) for \(p>0.\) Theorem 1. (i) If \(0<p<(n-1)/(n-2)\), then \(r^{n-2}{\mathcal M}_ p(u;r)\to \mu (\{0\})\) as \(r\to 0+.\) (ii) If \((n-1)/(n-2)\leq p<(n-1)/(n-3)\), then there is an open subset D of (0,1) such that \(\int_{D} t^{-1} dt<+\infty\) and such that \(r^{n-2} {\mathcal M}_ p(u;r)\to \mu (\{0\})\) as \(r\to 0+\), where \(r\not\in D.\) Other results include a boundary analogue of Theorem 1 for superharmonic functions u defined on the half-space \({\mathbb{R}}^{n-1}\times (0,+\infty)\), where \(n\geq 2\).
