Akin's (Laplace mapping) method of mesh generation is reviewed, whereby the solution of Laplace's equation in a rectangle, with given Dirichlet data at the boundary, is used to generate two-dimensional finite element meshes in arbitrary (simply connected) plane domains. It is shown that the method may be unsatisfactory, for instance for regions with re- entrant corners or cusps. A modification of Akin's method is proposed which gives better results in special cases. A numerical example is presented.
