Both the symmetric groups and the general linear groups have skew modules. These were studied by James, Peel, Farahat and Clausen, resp. by Akin, Buchsbaum, Weyman and Kouwenhoven. In this paper the author defines and studies similar modules for arbitrary reductive algebraic groups. These modules have good filtrations (generalizing the filtration by Schur modules of the skew modules for \(GL_ n)\). Combining with results in a previous paper [J. Algebra 101, 473-488 (1986; Zbl 0607.20023)], the author also establishes the existence of socalled Akin-Buchsbaum resolutions of skew modules for \(GL_ n.\) Finally it should be mentioned that as a biproduct of the techniques used in this paper, an elegant alternative proof of how the coordinate ring of a reductive algebraic group may be filtered is given. This result was originally proved independently by the author and M. Koppinen.
