The author introduces symbols with matrix entries in the Steinberg group of a ring. These symbols are used to detect torsion elements in the \(K_ 2\) of a field F. In particular, every element of odd prime order p in \(K_ 2F\), \(p\neq char(F)\), is a product of at most p-2 of these symbols. The results are based on papers of Suslin and of Rosset-Tate.
