Let G be a connected, reductive algebraic group defined over \(F_ q\), F a Frobenius endomorphism of G, and \(G^ F\) the finite group of F-fixed points of G. Let U be the unipotent radical of an F-stable Borel subgroup of G and \(U_+\) the subgroup of U generated by root subgroups corresponding to positive, non-simple roots. Let \(\Lambda\) be the set of characters of \(U^ F\) trivial on \(U^ F_+\). In a previous paper [Osaka J. Math. 25, 149-159 (1988; Zbl 0659.20033)] the author proved that if the characteristic p of \(F_ q\) is odd, and if \(\chi\) is an irreducible character of \(G^ F\) such that \(<\chi,\lambda^{G^ F}>=1\) for some \(\lambda\in \Lambda\) or p does not divide \(\chi\) (1) when p is a good prime for G, then the rational Schur index \(m_ 0(\chi)\leq 2\). In this paper the author states (Theorem 1) for various types of simple groups G, certain special cases of his result when \(m_ 0(\chi)=1\). In another theorem (Theorem 3) he gives various special cases when there exist irreducible characters with Schur index 2 over Q. Brief outlines of proofs are given.
