We obtain a relatively compact exact expression for the Hopf radius R as a function of the Lorenz parameters \(\sigma\) and b. Numerical evaluation of \(R=R(\sigma,b)\) together with a simple, asymptotic expression for R give clear evidence that the bifurcation is subcritical always in the physical parameter range.
