We prove interior oscillation and global Hölder estimates for convex solutions of a large class of Monge-Ampère equations of the form \((*)\quad \det D^ 2u=f(x,u,Du)\) in a bounded domain \(\Omega \subset {\mathbb R}^ n\). The main condition imposed on \(f\) is sufficiently fast growth with respect to \(Du\) coupled with not too rapid decay of \(f\) with respect to \(x\) as \(x\) approaches \(\partial \Omega\). Of particular interest is the fact that the estimates obtained are independent of any boundary conditions. The main example of the class of equations considered is the equation of prescribed Gauss curvature. In the second part of the paper we prove the existence, uniqueness and interior regularity of solutions of certain equations of the form (*) which are extremal in the sense that the outer unit normal derivative of the solution is infinite everywhere on \(\partial \Omega\). These results are a generalization of our earlier work on the equation of prescribed Gauss curvature [J. Differ. Geom. 20, 311--327 (1984; Zbl 0566.53013)].
