Since 1971 it is well known that the KdV equation is a nontrivial example of a completely integrable infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system [\textit{C. S. Gardner}, J. Math. Phys. 12, 1548-1551 (1971)]. This case is considered to be ``one dimensional'' because of the single space variable figuring on the KdV equation. In the beginning of the 80s the multidimensional analogues of these phenomena were discovered, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I equation (KP-I) has among the first of them. [\textit{S. V. Manakov}, Physica D, Vol. 3(1981), No.1/2, 420-427 (1981; Zbl 0599.35003).] The paper in question describes the Hamiltonian structure for the KP-II equation. To this end a deep investigation of the associated inverse scattering problem is undertaken, including complete description of the spectral data, of the symmetry properties of this data and of the ``dispersion'' relation for this data. Green's function of the associated inverse problem has been heavily exploited to obtain these results. Using them a Poisson bracket is built for the KP-II corresponding to the generalized Hamiltonian dynamics, discovered by \textit{P. A. M. Dirac} [Can. J. Math. 2, 129-148 (1950; Zbl 0036.141)].
