The analysis of elliptic boundary value problems by means of the so- called direct boundary element method requires the evaluation of the normal derivative along the boundary. The authors obtain an integral representation for the above derivative in terms of strongly singular integrals for the two-dimensional Laplace operator. Methods for evaluating these integrals are presented. Three example problems are considered in order to show the power of the method.
