The author shows that \(\rho^w(K_1,K_2)=2 W(\mathrm{conv}(K_1\cup K_2)) - W(K_1) - W(K_2)\), where \(W\) signifies the average width and conv denotes convex hull, is a metric on the space \({\mathcal K}_n\) of compact, convex non-empty subsets of \(n\)-space, and equals, up to a constant, the integral of \(| h(K_1,u) - h(K_2,u)|\) over the \((n-1)\)-sphere, where \(h(K,u)\) denotes the support function of \(K\) in the direction \(u\). He goes on to show that \(\rho^W\) is equivalent to the Hausdorff metric \(\rho^H\) on \(\mathcal K_n\), the space (\(\mathcal K_n,\rho^W)\) is complete, \(W\) is uniformly continuous on (\(\mathcal K_n,\rho^H)\) and (\(\mathcal K_n,\rho^W)\), but this is not so for the other Quermassintegrals.
