B-splines with Birkhoff knots (Q5916463): Difference between revisions

We introduce in this paper B-splines with Birkhoff knots and prove variation diminishing property of sequences of B-splines and the total positivity of the colocation matrix corresponding to the Hermite interpolation problem by splines with Birkhoff knots. Then, as a corollary, we derive an extension of the Schwenberg-Whitney theorem, covering the case of Birkhoff interpolation.
