The author defines a partial Padé approximant to a given formal power series f to be a rational function that has certain prescribed zeros and poles (which f is known to have) and whose Taylor expansion matches that of f as far as possible. This extends earlier work on higher-order Padé approximants where prescribed poles are imposed on the rational function. This paper examines this problem presenting some interesting numerical examples and points out the need for additional research on this problem.
