\textit{K. Strambach} [Math. Ann. 179, 15-30 (1968; Zbl 0164.513)] constructed a stable plane on \({\mathbb{R}}^ 2\) by taking as lines the images of hyperbola branches under the group \(SL_ 2{\mathbb{R}}\); for a complex analogon see \textit{R. Löwen} [Geom. Dedicata 21, 1-12 (1986; Zbl 0596.51007)]. These stable planes are not embeddable into projective planes. The author shows that Strambach's construction works over any euclidean field, and he determines the collineation group of these Strambach planes. This involves a geometric reconstruction of the field on the set of ends (in the sense of Hilbert). The second part of the paper gives an axiomatic characterization of these planes in terms of quasihyperbolic planes; these are incidence structures with a quaternary relation (``directed parallelity of segments'') on points. The proof of the representation theorem, which says that the Strambach planes are precisely the ``regular pointed quasihyperbolic planes'', requires an analysis of various configurations, and it shows that the Strambach planes share many features with hyperbolic planes.
