The author considers a flexible construction of shape preserving interpolating quadratic splines. The construction is based on the paper of \textit{L. L. Schumaker} [SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 20, 854-864 (1983; Zbl 0521.65009)] and uses the Hermite interpolation with regard to the function values and to the first derivatives. The main idea is the use of splines, which have more breakpoints than interpolating points. The additional breakpoints are not determined beforehand but are added to suitable places when necessary.
