The authors give an explicit construction of the skew representations of the symmetric groups. This is then used to give natural proofs of Littlewood's decomposition theorem for the characters of skew representations as well as the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating characters of irreducible representations and an extension of this rule to skew characters.
