A sufficient condition which guarantees that the nth polynomial of best approximation to \(f\in C[-1,1]\) is increasing for n sufficiently large, is given in this paper. Using this condition the author gives a counter- example to a theorem of \textit{G. Tzimbalario} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 1311-1312 (1977; Zbl 0392.41015)].
