The paper employs the energy method to discuss the finite anti-plane shear of an infinitely long cylinder composed of homogeneous, isotropic, incompressible material with rectangular cross-section in the undeformed state. The width of the rectangle is h, the lateral sides are traction- free, there is a prescribed shear traction at the near end with resultant shear force ph and there is a uniformly distributed shear stress p at the far end. An energy-like quadratic functional defined on the difference between the deformation field and a state of simple shear corresponding to p is shown to decay exponentially with the distance from the near end. The estimated decay rate is characterized in terms of the load level p, the domain geometry and material properties. The case of self- equilibrated loading \((p=0)\) and power-law materials is examined. The method eliminates the need for the convertion of the basic Neumann problem into a Dirichlet problem and the results on energy decay are obtained for a finite domain.
