A finitely generated module M over a local ring R is said to have finite virtual projection dimension, if the completion \(\tilde R\) of R can be presented as \(Q/(x_ 1,...,x_ r)\), where \((x_ 1,...,x_ r)\) is a regular sequence in Q, and the projective dimension of \(\tilde M\) over Q is finite. It is known that if the Betti numbers of M are bounded, then the finiteness of its virtual projective dimension implies that its minimal free resolution eventually becomes periodic of period 2. The authors construct an example which shows that the converse does not hold in general. The ring R in the example is a polynomial ring in 4 variables modulo 7 quadratic forms, the module is \(R^ 2/((x_ 1,x_ 2),(x_ 3,x_ 4))\). This example is shown to be minimal in several respects.
